What Happens During an Eye Exam in Canada

iSeeWell5 min readwhat happens during an eye examcomprehensive eye exam Canadaeye exam preparation

A comprehensive eye exam checks how you see and the health of your eyes. It usually includes a discussion of your health and visual needs, vision measurements and an assessment of the eyes. The exact tests depend on your age, symptoms, history and examination findings. Canadian Association of Optometrists - The Eye Exam

You do not need to know the names of the tests before attending. The useful preparation is to explain what has changed, bring relevant information and ask the clinician to explain the results in terms you can use.

The visit begins with your history

Tell the optometrist why you booked and whether the concern affects one eye or both. Describe when it started and whether it is constant or occurs during particular activities. Mention existing eye conditions, previous surgery, medications and relevant family history.

Explain what you need your vision for: reading, driving, computer work, school or a particular task. These details help put the measurements in context. A problem that only appears at one working distance is still worth describing. Canadian Association of Optometrists - Eye exam and sight test

Vision measurements and eye health checks

You may read a chart, compare lenses and follow instructions while the clinician looks at your eyes with different instruments. Vision measurements help establish how clearly you see and whether a prescription could help. Other assessments examine how the eyes work together and the structures inside and outside the eyes. If two lens choices look the same, say so. You can ask for an instruction to be repeated or explain that a test is uncomfortable. Tell staff beforehand if communication, mobility or sensory support would make the visit easier.

A sight test mainly addresses a glasses prescription. A comprehensive exam also considers eye health. When booking, confirm which service you are arranging rather than relying on the word “test.” Canadian Association of Optometrists - Eye exam and sight test

Dilation and additional tests

The clinician may use drops to widen your pupils for a better view inside the eyes. Vision can become temporarily blurry and sensitive to light afterwards. Plan transport in advance and ask about returning to driving or close work. Bring sunglasses if you have them. National Eye Institute - Dilated eye exams

Our dilated eye exam guide covers preparation in more detail. If another test is recommended, ask what question it is intended to answer, what it costs and whether it needs a separate appointment.

What to bring

Bring your current glasses and contact lens information, a medication list and relevant health or insurance details. Previous reports can be useful when changing providers; ask how to arrange access to them. The CAO's preparation guidance includes bringing the eyewear you currently use. If you wear contacts, ask the clinic whether to arrive wearing them or leave them out beforehand. Instructions depend on the assessment. A contact lens fitting can involve different preparation from a routine exam.

How much time to allow

Ask the clinic for the expected appointment length when you book. A visit may include time for drops to take effect, extra testing or a discussion of a new concern. Avoid planning a tight return to driving or detailed work if dilation might be used.

If you need to leave by a particular time, mention that before booking so the clinic can advise whether the proposed appointment is suitable.

Leave with a clear next step

Before leaving, ask what the examination found, whether anything needs monitoring or treatment, and when you should return. If you receive a referral, ask how it will be arranged. Request clarification about any prescription or instructions you do not understand.

The next visit should reflect your clinician's advice. Our eye exam timing guide explains general intervals, while the coverage guide addresses payment eligibility.
