Direct Billing for Eye Exams in Canada
Direct billing lets an eligible provider submit an insurance claim on your behalf. Depending on the arrangement and your benefits, the insurer may pay the provider directly, reducing what you need to pay at the visit. It does not guarantee that the whole eye exam is covered. TELUS Health - How direct billing works
Two questions need separate answers: does the clinic support direct billing for your plan, and does your plan cover the particular service? Confirm both before relying on a reduced payment.
Check your benefit before the appointment
Look at your current plan documents or member account. Check the eye exam allowance, the benefit period and how much has already been used. Ask whether glasses, contact lenses and examinations share a limit or have separate benefits.
Plans may apply visit limits, reimbursement percentages or limits on the eligible amount. Sun Life's coverage guidance, for example, explains that a benefit can be limited even when a service is generally included. Your own plan determines the result. Sun Life - Checking benefits and limits
If a statement is unclear, ask the insurer a specific question: “What amount would be eligible for the examination I am arranging, and what information do you need to confirm that?”
Ask the clinic what it can submit
Tell the clinic your insurer and ask whether it can submit that type of claim for your plan. Confirm whether direct payment to the clinic is supported or whether any reimbursement will come to you. Ask what happens if a claim cannot be processed during the visit.
Ask the clinic how to provide the required coverage details and identification. Avoid posting insurance or health information in public comments or reviews. Sun Life advises members to show their coverage card when a provider can submit a claim for them. Check which details your own insurer and clinic need. Sun Life - Claims and coordination of benefits
You do not need to share your insurer account password with a directory or booking service. Keep account access separate from the benefits information legitimately needed for a claim.
Understand why a balance can remain
The fee and the insurer's approved reimbursement may be different. You may have already used some of the allowance, a service may be excluded, or the plan may pay only a percentage of an eligible amount. Ask the insurer to explain the claim decision instead of assuming direct billing failed merely because a balance remains.
Request an itemized receipt showing the services provided and payment made. Keep the claim statement too. Together, they help you understand what was submitted, what was paid and whether any follow-up is needed.

Public coverage is a separate question
Provincial health coverage and private workplace or personal benefits are different programs. A clinic submitting an insured provincial examination is not the same arrangement as submitting a private benefits claim. Ask which program applies to each service.
Start with the provincial eye exam coverage guide, then have the clinic confirm your eligibility. Do not assume that a health card covers eyewear or every additional test.
If you have more than one plan
Ask the insurers how benefits should be coordinated and which claim goes first. Keep the first insurer's claim statement for the second submission if requested. For example, Sun Life asks for the other insurer's statement when a claim is submitted to it second. Sun Life - Claims and coordination of benefits
Avoid assuming that two plans automatically remove every cost. The eligible services, limits and coordination rules still apply.
If direct billing is unavailable
Ask whether you need to pay the clinic and submit a claim yourself. Confirm the documents required and the claim deadline in your plan. Direct deposit of a reimbursement to your own bank account is different from the clinic being paid directly. Sun Life - Claims and coordination of benefits
Before a routine visit, settle four details: the quoted fee, expected benefit, payment method and who submits the claim. For clinic discovery, browse iSeeWell and confirm the billing arrangement directly with the selected clinic. Urgent eye symptoms should be assessed promptly rather than delayed while you compare payment options.
