Every spring, the Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) spotlights eye health for Canadians. For 2026, Vision Health Month aligns with the GetEyeWise public education push.

The CAO describes this phase as an online campaign that runs through May and June on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, in English and French.

The CAO describes optometrists as being at the forefront of vision care. A comprehensive eye exam helps diagnose, treat and help prevent eye disease and disorders. That exam can also help to reveal more serious conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some neurological conditions.

Why comprehensive eye exams matter

Many eye diseases and conditions develop quietly, without obvious symptoms. A comprehensive eye exam is a practical way to detect eye diseases early. Campaign messaging also notes that exams may identify other health issues and can uncover underlying concerns such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, some cancers, brain tumours, and neurological conditions, depending on what your optometrist finds.

CAO leadership on routine eye care

Dr. Allison Scott, President of the Canadian Association of Optometrists, says that maintaining good eye health is important for clear vision, but your eyes are also a window into your overall health, and that seeing an optometrist should be a regular part of everyone’s health care routine, from infants to seniors.
